I paint mostly in two ways: oil on canvas and acrylic on paper. The acrylic paintings are usually smaller than the oils, the paint being generously, quickly and more spontaneously applied.

The oils are more measured in thought and process, with each painting evolving through several transformations before completion.

I like to set projects for myself and paint within these frameworks for several months before moving on to another theme. Subject matter comes from the Sussex downlands and from my trips to other places in Britain - towns and coastlines that I find interesting, atmospheric and romantic. Favourite places are Suffolk and Cumbria. Sometimes I paint from a smaller domestic landscape - gardens, flowers and my feline companions.

But my paintings are largely about rhythm, the goal being to get colour, shape, tone and mark to work together. Influences come from a number of painters but I love the words of Ben Hartley: “Neatness is seldom the painter's best friend.”
